What is PopBangColour?
Ian Cook – aka PopBangColour – has carved out a niche over the past 14 years, producing inspired automotive artwork using remote control cars among other things.
Ian Cook, ex-teacher and mastermind behind PopBangColour began his journey when he was given a remote control car for Christmas in 2006 and was told “Don’t take it down the studio and don’t get paint on it!” and the rest is history.
Now, in 2022, Ian creates some of the finest and most unique examples of automotive artwork available on the market using toy cars, radio-controlled cars and actual car tyres in place of traditional paintbrushes.
PopBangColour was born from a combination of Ian's passion for cars and motorsport as well as his training and degree in Fine Art Painting.
Initially operating out of a unit at the Wulfrun Shopping Centre in Wolverhampton, Ian began creating colour wheels through his distinctive method and was eventually picked up by regional, and then national media, increasing in notoriety following a Pudsey Bear piece for Children in Need.
A swathe of high-profile commissions in 2008 would see the PopBangColour project shift into another gear. A Honda Civic Type R was produced for Auto Express Magazine before a Lewis Hamilton portrait at that year's Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Following the festival, Ian received a call from M&C Saatchi requesting a 12m by 8m portrait of Lewis Hamilton to be produced for Reebok, which was subsequently displayed next to Tower Bridge in the build-up to the 2008 Formula 1 title decider in Brazil.
Since then, PopBangColour artwork has featured on Top Gear in 2009, the One Show and a critically acclaimed advert for Jaguar Land Rover in 2011. Ian was also commissioned to produce a piece for Comma Oil to launch a motorsport promotion at Brands Hatch.
Several projects have also been executed in the Formula 1 paddock. Namely, at the Italian GP in parc fermé and in the pit lane at Silverstone in 2015.
In 2022, a partnership between PopBangColour and PaddlUp sprang into life, with several high-value pieces adorning the walls of The Gallery and collaborations at various events laying the foundations for a long-term affiliation.
