1996 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet (993)

Produced between 1995 and 1998, the 993 is considered a highwater mark as the last generation of air-cooled 911. As such, it commands increasing notoriety in the collector and investor market whilst retaining modern classic usability. In its manual six-speed 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet guise, this pristine Black Metallic 1996 example is one of just 151 manual, four-wheel-drive open-top cars produced for the UK market from the renowned Zuffenhausen production line. This was the first iteration of 911 to include a six-speed manual transmission as standard; its predecessors featured four or five-speed transmissions.

The Carrera 4 uses the same 3.6-litre, flat-six air-cooled unit as the standard Carrera, however, in this instance that power is sent to all four wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. A 'Carrera 4' badge on the rear engine cover, along with silver brake calipers and clear indicator lenses on the front and red on the rear, help to distinguish it from its rear-wheel-drive sibling. This car also has a genuine Porsche Techquipment rear bridge spoiler with third-level brake light.

For the 993, Porsche heavily revised the four-wheel drive system to include a viscous coupling system that distributed the power. It was much smoother than the 964 Carrera 4 it replaced. In addition, Porsche fitted a rear limited-slip differential and automatic brake differential which applied braking force to a detected slipping rear wheel.

Another improvement was the implementation of an all-alloy multilink rear suspension attached to an alloy subframe improving handling, road noise, ride and reducing the previous generation's tendency for lift-off oversteer.

Other improvements over the 964 include a new dual-flow exhaust system, larger brakes with drilled discs, and revised power steering.

The interior features black leather sport-bucket seats and two small seats in the back. The instrument cluster is classic Porsche featuring five dials, with the tachometer in the middle and a clock on the right side.

First registered in 1996 this 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet looks and feels every bit the low mileage of just 37,000 miles.
