When venturing off road or down the local green lane the general consensus is you'll need a Land Rover-esque vehicle with permanent four wheel drive and jacked-up suspension to do it; and generally that’s been pretty much correct. Until the Ariel Nomad came along, that is. 

Ariel not only went against the grain; they pretty much flipped the book on its head. Yes, the Nomad still utilises off road-based tires and long travel suspension however there is no heavy four wheel drive system in site. In fact, the word heavy doesn’t seem to be in Ariels vocabulary, with the Nomad weighing in at a scant 670kg - around a third of the traditional go-to Defender, and under 25% of the weight of larger mud pluggers.

This lack of weight negated the need for a heavy four wheel drive system and large turbocharged torque-monster engines, with Ariel relying on Honda VTEC power for the Nomad as per the Atom, with one slight difference; a move from the 2.0ltr K20 - as used in the Atom - to the 2.4ltr K24 engine. While the larger capacity motor calls time at some 1,400 rpm less than the stratospheric K20 - the torque is increased from 177 lb ft to a not insignificant  221 lb ft and peaks at a much lower 4,300 rpm. 

That extra torque, when combined with the right tires, allows this featherweight to deliver truly epic off road performance. And once you’re finished off the road and hit tarmac, you’ll be passing 60 mph in a scant 3.4 seconds and 100 mph comes just 5.3 seconds later. 

This particular example looks stunning in its unique Bugatti Yellow paintwork, its three owners having amassed only 9,391 miles. The options list is bulging with all the right bits to sustain being supercharged if one required, and benefits from the ‘expected’ upgrades such as stainless fixings, hydraulic handbrake, heated windscreen, upgraded braking system, quick-release steering wheel and optional FOX dampers with Eibach springs.

Whether on road or off it, the Nomad is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.
