More:

To some, the Ariel Nomad R may seem a contradictory oddity. Given that the regular Nomad is, in effect, a car that does off-road what an Atom does on it, it seems somewhat peculiar to take a Nomad - with its long-travel suspension and off-road mud terrain tyres - and swap those bits for bigger wheels, stickier, low profile tyres and a stiffer suspension to make it….well….more ‘Atomy’. However, ask anyone who has experienced the Nomad R either as driver, passenger or onlooker, and they’ll explain with a huge grin how this unconventional little thing will blow any expectations you have into next week.

Having produced only 6, the Nomad R is as limited as they get. With the engine lifted from the ferocious Atom 3.5R, the explosive supercharged Honda K20 V-TEC engine kicks out 335bhp and in collaboration with its sequential gearbox allows the  C.700kg Nomad to rocket from 0-60mph in under 3 seconds.

Ah yes, that gearbox. Similar to the SADEV units used in the Atom 3.5R and the original Atom V8 but upgraded to the later ST82-17 model, the all-aluminum unit weighs in at only 38kg. Featuring an integrated oil pump, straight-cut gears and a 3-disc ramp and plate limited slip differential with externally adjustable preload, it’s quite the bit of kit. Operated by an electronically controlled pneumatic carbon fibre shifter paddle located behind the steering wheel, there is no need to use the clutch; once rolling the box allows full-throttle upshifts, taking only 40 milliseconds on the way up and 50 milliseconds on the way back down, auto-blipping as it goes. The ability to go down 6 gears in under 1 second has never been so enjoyable.

The Nomad R continues to utilise the standard cars long travel geometry but while the knobbly tires and jacked-up suspension have gone, in their place sit larger 18-inch wheels with stickier tyres, custom Bilstein MDS units or - if one chooses - an upgrade to the fantastic Ohlins option as fitted to this example. Braking is handled by Alcon 4-piston calipers alongside 2-piece ventilated discs at both the front and the rear, and this example is fitted with the optional brake-bias valve to adjust braking power to your preference.

This particular car is still with its original owner, and having been personalised with many of the ‘must have’ options adding close to £28,000 to the purchase price, and having been used sparingly has only covered some 1,544 miles. It is accompanied with its original handbook and document box, and received its first service from Ariel last year. It is due its first MOT test on 31/05/2024.

While all 5 were built to the same base specification, Ariel is all about personalisation so it’s no surprise that all 5 have differences between them owing to their original purchaser’s own particular tastes.. We have been informed by the owner that this example is the only other vehicle Ariel has painted in their Atom V8 colour scheme, making this example a true one-off.
