The Lamborghini Diablo Roadster prototype concept was revealed at the 1992 Geneva Motor Show to provoke reaction to what an open-top Lamborghini could look like. The scissor doors were retained, and the chassis strengthened to compensate for the removal of the roof. The response from the media was overwhelmingly positive creating an immediate order bank for the production version – the four-wheel drive Diablo Roadster VT subsequently launched in late 1995 at the Bologna Motor Show.
Only 200 VT Roadster versions were built, each featuring a removable targa top made entirely of carbon fibre that was stored above the engine bonnet when not in use. The ‘standard’ VT Engine included the addition of the variable valve timing system to the 492 bhp, 5.7 litre DOHC V-12 engine mated to the five-speed manual transmission.
Lamborghini connoisseurs, Platinum Motors in California then created a limited run of just seven VTTT cars in conjunction with the factory, equipped with twin Garrett T4 turbochargers and custom-built intercoolers, competition valves with race guides, cylinder heads with polished ports, and a reprogrammed electronic fuel injection system. Modifications to the drivetrain included a custom Kevlar twin-plate clutch to cope with the extra torque and a new short ratio gearbox to improve acceleration. The brakes were upgraded with cross-drilled, ventilated discs and carbon fibre brake pads.
A further three twin-supercharged were created by Platinum Motors, making the VTTT stable a collection of ten cars, only two of which were Roadsters – one twin-turbo and one twin-supercharged example. These Diablo VTTT have become the sought-after derivative due to their scarcity and with examples not often on the open market.
A one-of-one twin-supercharged 6.0L VTTT Roadster.
In 2000, the 6.0L was introduced by Lamborghini to the Diablo GT and the Diablo VT 6.0 as a final flourish for the model. This Diablo Roadster is a true one-off and combines the best elements of the Diablo story using the VTTT ethos being twin-supercharged, but uniquely with the later 6.0L unit with all components supplied via the factory's Polo Storico programme and being the last of the pre-facelift examples with desirable 'Phase 1' pop-up headlights. In addition, the car was sent to Modena to Polo Storico for a full interior re-trim by Lamborghini and subsequently registered as a VTTT variant.
This Diablo, therefore, is a one-of-one twin-supercharged 6.0L VTTT Roadster.
