More

Launched at the 2015 Autosport International show the Ariel Nomad caused quite the stir from public and press alike; developed to offer an entirely new type of all-terrain high-performance driving, the Nomad dared go where no Atom had been before. While a ‘Nomad-style’ vehicle has been on the companies radar since the early days of the Atom, the introduction of their popular motorcycle the Ariel Ace and the constant evolution of the Atom had always come first.

However, Henry Siebert-Saunders, the son of Ariel founder Simon Saunders and Ariels General Manager, stepped in to complete a Nomad prototype in part due to his own interest in off-roading. His experience made him the ideal candidate to head up its development too, testing the Nomad on every type of terrain from race tracks to WRC stages, proving grounds to forest roads. Henry envisioned a vehicle that could take on routes and activities usually resigned to the toughest of 4x4s, and the Nomad successfully proved that by combining light weight and torque, wrapped up in a compact package, ensured no need for a heavy 4WD system. Indeed, while the Nomad weighs over 100kg more than its Atom cousin and utilises heavier wheels, tyres and a beefed up chassis, it still tips the scales at a scant 670 kg. To give that figure some perspective that’s 50 kg lighter than the original Lotus Elise, and 30 kg lighter than the last of the classic Rover Mini, before BMW stepped in and made it much less Mini…

So clearly, this is no marketing exercise. The Nomad was developed to be tough - and tough it is. The bronze-welded chassis of the Nomad is undeniably Ariel, however unlike the Atom it extends over the cockpit creating a complete safety cage to protect both driver and passenger - very handy for those rogue branches and bushes. You can even add a roof (!), albeit a fabric one rather than metal to avoid adding any further kilos.

Long travel Bilstein suspension is met with double unequal-length wishbones to ensure the Nomad can take whatever you throw at it; even the body panels can take a thorough beating thanks to being manufactured from the same material traffic cones are made from. And for the owner who wants nothing but the best you have the option to upgrade to competition-spec high-strength wishbones and Ohlins multi-adjustable hydraulic bumpstop dampers, complete with 2 piece springs - as fitted to this example.

Power comes from the familiar Honda K-series engine family, however in place of the usual 2.0 litre powerplant sits the larger 2.4 litre K24 unit. It’s certainly not lacking in ponies; 235bhp out of the box is plenty in something that weighs as much as a shoebox, however it’s the torque number that matters with the Nomad - 221lb ft to be exact, which is more than the supercharged Atom produced at the time.

Of course, Ariel has developed the Nomad just as they have the Atom, and a year after launch the supercharged option was added. 235bhp grew to 290bhp and 221lb ft of torque to 251lb ft. While performance of the base Nomad was impressive, the supercharged version took only 7.4 seconds to reach 100 mph (from the base model's time of 8.7), giving a bloody nose to many a sports and supercars.

This particular example looks stunning with its chassis in Pure Green and contrasting black bodywork and is one of the highest specification Nomads available today.
