A true collector's piece

Jeremy Clarkson famously said “you can’t be a true petrolhead until you have owned an Alfa Romeo”. While that somewhat tongue-in-cheek comment was said in jest, he inadvertently made a significant point.

Alfa Romeo has been involved in the exciting world of motorsport pretty much since the early days of combustion-engined travel, entering two of their ‘24hp’ models in the famous Targa Florio well over a century ago in 1911, and have been involved with motor racing – in one way or another – ever since. In fact, a notable driver for Alfa in its early days was a certain fresh-faced Enzo Ferrari.

Securing their first World Manufacturers Championship in 1925, their first AIACR European Championship followed suit six years later. Other successes quickly followed with Alfa seeing wins at many famous racing events such as Le Mans, Mille Miglia and Targa Florio to name but a few. The pinnacle of Alfa’s success at that time however, came from a new racing series which originated from the 1930s European Motor Racing Championships (EMRC). That new series was Formula One.

The first world championship race took place on 13 May 1950 at the UK’s famed Silverstone circuit, and it was here that Alfa not only took the win but also filled the podium with second and third places. Back-to-back F1 championships in '50 and '51 were the high points for Alfa and the marque remains involved in various forms of motorsport to this day as a manufacturer, engine supplier, and via privateers.

This led to many engaging road cars, from the famous GTA and Spider models to the Alfasud, the 33, the GTV, wonderful limited models such as the SZ and performance cars such as the 8C Competizione and 4C. Then, in 2015, Alfa teased its all-new saloon car – the Giulia – to the world. Underpinned by a new longitudinal-engine, rear-wheel drive platform and overseen by the technical director of Ferrari, Phillipe Krief, the Giulia’s launch coincided with the company's 105th anniversary.

While the Giulia line-up features a number of different specifications, the Quadrofoglio (Italian for 'four leaf clover' and a good luck symbol used by Alfa for over a century) took the top spot. At its heart sits a 2.9-litre V6 twin-turbo engine related to Ferrari’s F154 CB V8 engine – tuned by Ferrari-trained engineers no less – producing over 500bhp. The Giulia also benefits from 50/50 weight distribution, further validating its status as a bona fide driver’s car.

While Alfa remained in various forms of motorsport for most of its history, there had been a hiatus from Formula One from 1985 until 2019. The highly anticipated return was celebrated with the aptly-named Guilia Quadrifoglio Racing Edition.

Only 10 examples were allocated for the UK market from a 30-car run making an already rare car really rare. Furthermore, each of those ten was given an individual plaque to commemorate Alfa’s 10 victories in Formula One in 1950-1951, with this particular example bearing the 1950 win at Spa-Francorchamps.

The car has only covered a mere 260 miles

All examples are adorned with a racing livery which pays tribute to the Alfa Romeo Racing C38 Formula One car, a beautiful combination of Trofeo White and Competizione Red with an exposed carbon fibre roof. Darker coloured 19-inch alloy wheels are wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tyres, and braking is taken care of by carbon ceramic brakes and contrasting red brake callipers.

What really makes the Racing Edition stand out to purists and investors however is the Sauber-engineered Areo Enhancement package. Included are wider side skirts, a more prominent rear spoiler, a unique front splitter and side ‘winglets’ on the front wings, all manufactured from carbon fibre and are functional to provide an aerodynamic advantage over its base model. Alfa’s powerplant engineers provide a modest 10hp power increase over the base Quadrifoglio – which was hardly lacking in power – and an Akrapovič titanium exhaust gives the Guilia plenty of bark to back up the bite.

The development continues on the inside, with the carbon-shell Sparco racing seats taking centre stage, and complimenting the red stitching are matching red seatbelts. The use of carbon doesn't stop with just the seats, however, it also features heavily on the centre console, dashboard, door cards, steering wheel and gear selector. The impressive semi-automatic transmission can be operated manually either by the aluminium steering wheel paddles or via the carbon-trimmed Mopar gear selector. The remainder of the cabin features a welcoming mix of black leather and alcantara.

It can be safely said then, that the Racing Edition Giulia is a unique and collectable special edition super saloon, having been designed and developed with genuine Formula One engineering.

This particular example is still in the hands of its original owner. Purchased new in June 2020, the owner has informed us the car has only been driven a total of four times; twice for annual servicing and twice to Goodwood, having been selected to be displayed on the race circuit at the GRRC Breakfast Club, the other pride of place in front of Goodwood House for the GRRC Open Day Vehicle Display. Due to this minimal use, the car has only covered a mere 260 miles.

To preserve the car as a true collector's piece, the owner has chosen to not remove the coverings fitted by the factory upon completion, including the sill plates and display screen, while the steering wheel, gear level and seat covers remain with the car, only been removed for photographs. The front number plate was not fitted to ensure no holes were drilled into the bumper. Truly, an 'as new' example and not to be missed.
