Muscle Cars have been the backbone of car culture in America since the late 1940's. General Motors are generally credited with creating the first production muscle car by putting its 303Ci (5 Litre) Rocket V8 from its full-sized luxury sedan into a smaller and lighter Oldsmobile 88.

Soon, all the big American manufacturers responded and rivalry was intense throughout the fifties, sixties and into the seventies when the oil crisis  led to a decline in high-compression, big horsepower automobiles. The eighties produced a mini-revival of sorts, but, the real horsepower race has been in the last decade or so and led to power outputs more than doubling those of the early muscle legends.

When Dodge launched the 3rd generation of the Challenger in 2008, it was somewhat inevitable that more power was around the corner. The Challenger progressed through a number of limited editions that included the SRT Hellcat, the Hellcat Redeye, the Scat Pack, and the Demon, which kept on pushing the power up to a heady 840 bhp.

In 2020 Dodge then launched the SRT Super Stock. Designed to fit below the top-spec Demon and above the Hellcat Redeye, The Super Stock has a slightly more powerful version of the Redeye V8 and a slightly higher redline to produce 807 bhp and 707 lb-ft of torque, running through an 8-speed semi-automatic transmission. The name is derived from the Super Stock class in drag racing which features cars that look fairly 'stock' from the outside while highly modified under the skin. The Challenger Super Stock is no different, having lightweight 18-inch wheels and the same drag radial tyres as the 840bhp SRT Demon. The Bilstein suspension was optimised further for drag racing when flicked into Track mode and benefitted from a shorter final drive to really eke out the most performance.

The resulting performance is unsurprisingly explosive. 0-60 mph passes in 3.2 seconds and runs the ¼ mile in 10.5 seconds at 131 mph and will keep pulling to its electronically limited top speed of 168 mph - the maximum rated speed of its drag tyres.

As well as muscle, the Super Stock has rarity on its side. Due to the Pandemic, the resulting slowing of supply chains and parts supply issues in 2020, only 192 examples were built in that year, and in 2021 only a further 559 were produced. Approximately 207 are to be built during 2023 ending the Super Stocks' four-year production run with an approx total of just 1,527 cars. To put that into perspective; the flagship Challenger was the full-fat, drag-ready SRT Demon. Fitted with the optional ‘Demon box’ of drag extras such as thinner front wheels and tyres, it was so fast it requires the addition of a roll cage to be able to run on NHRA-sanctioned drag strips. How many did Dodge produce you ask? 3,300 examples. If only those 207 examples are built this year it will mean the Super Stock build tally over the four years will be less than the Demon’s one-year production run.

This particular example is believed to be the only Super Stock currently in the UK and possibly, the only one in Europe. Presented in very good condition and has only covered 9,181 miles from new, this is one of only a handful of cars allegedly ordered in the signature colour scheme of ‘TorRed’ - paying homage to the ever-popular ‘Hemi Orange’ of the 1970s - and was imported into the UK by its current owner. All duties paid and fully UK-registered, the Challenger is also accompanied by a clean CARFAX report and comes from only 1 Californian owner.
